About Universal Legal Protection

Universal Legal Protection ‘ULP’ is an independent, owner-managed business founded in 1999 as a specialist after the event litigation insurance broker. We are also able to supply a specialist litigation consultancy service, in addition to sourcing litigation funding for business to business litigation.

Furthermore, we have expertise in professional liability insurance and provide a bespoke broking service for pension trustee liability, professional indemnity and cyber/crime covers.

We go the extra mile to demonstrate reliability, integrity, transparency and trust. We listen to what each client wants and do our best to get it! Only when we have managed each client’s expectations do we go to market. If there are complexities and possible pitfalls, we explain them. Our philosophy is to work closely with our clients.

Richard has worked in Insurance since graduating from University in 1980. He worked as a Lloyd’s Broker specialising in Professional Indemnity and Directors & Officers insurance until moving on to Legal Expenses Insurance in 1990. Since 1990, Richard has specialised in all aspects of UK and overseas Legal Expenses Insurance, initially with The Legal Protection Group and then with Abbey Legal Protection. Richard established Universal Legal Protection (ULP) in 1999, not long after After-the-Event Litigation Insurance (ATE) emerged as a new type of insurance. ULP is one of the very few specialist ATE Litigation Insurance Brokers operating in the UK. As well as ATE, ULP specialises in broking liability insurance risks, in particular Pension Trustee Liability Insurances (PTL) and Professional Indemnity Insurances. Richard has also watched the markets for Litigation Funding and Litigation Finance emerge and evolve, and ULP acts as a Litigation Funding and Finance broker. In 2016, Richard launched ULP’s unique and revolutionary Consultancy Service - which enables Solicitors’ Clients to quickly and cost-effectively assess the best way to budget for their litigation. Richard is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and is a Chartered Insurance Broker.

Karen brought over thirty years’ experience working in the City of London (for several of the major Lloyd’s brokers) to ULP. Karen has always worked within Financial Lines and is an industry expert in Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII). Having experience of all PII classes, Karen is a true specialist within the legal sector, with in-depth working knowledge of the Minimum Terms and Conditions, Insurers’ requirements and Industry related issues; this experience and expertise enables her to tailor solutions to meet each client’s individual needs. Karen has worked closely with Law Firms of all sizes and structures to improve their risk management procedures thereby ensuring the most positive outcomes for their PII premiums. She also has a strong track record in guiding Firms through Mergers and Acquisitions and in assisting new start businesses. Additionally, Karen has expertise in arranging Corporate & Executive policies (cover for the COLP and COFA), Directors’ and Officers’ Liability policies, Pension Trustee Liability policies as well as Cyber Liability and Crime Covers. In 2016, Karen launched a unique Cyber Liability Insurance product for Solicitors.
